Master Sergeant Gant Maker was a highly decorated and well-respected marine - until his last mission left him as the sole survivor of an encounter with a vicious race called the Vacra. Served up as a scapegoat and drummed out of the military, he has since lived a life of seclusion with only an adopted alien as a companion.
Now the Vacra have returned. As the only person to have ever faced them and survived, Maker is reinstated in the corps and given the onerous task of finding this enemy on a world located at the edge of known space. Assisting him is an unlikely band of military rejects, including a blind sharpshooter, an unstable psychic, and a genetically engineered killing machine who refuses to fight.
Given that the Vacra have superior weapons and technology, Maker recognizes that his team is at a distinct disadvantage. But marines are nothing if not resourceful, and Maker has an audacious plan that just may level the playing field - if it doesn't get them all killed.

I read the teaser, thought I may be dealing with a hard sci fi work. A few chapters in, I realized its a comic book in long form. If you like comic books, you'll enjoy this book. If you don't, look elsewhere. The bad guys seem to be straight out of the halo video game, With cloaking, multiple limbs, and the occasional hand to hand weapon.Product details

Terminus Fringe Worlds Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Kevin Hardman Mikael Naramore IH Recherche Publishing Books Reviews
Filled with well established archetypes, memes, and tropes, this over the top sci-fi action adventure fits the pulp pocket book market rather well. There is absolutely nothing glaringly wrong in the writing, editing, or publishing whatsoever. There's also nothing particularly great either. So long as the price point stays reasonable this tale is sufficiently entertaining to be worth the time to read. I would read follow-up books, knowing that ultimately they will be forgettable and never worthy of a cult following.
Very Meh. I wanted to like this but certain things bugged me. First off the main charecter just felt like he had no depth, no personality. Next the dialogue was very long winded and unrealistic. It just didn't sound natural to me. And finally too much detail about stuff that didn't require it. For instance I don't need a paragraph dedicated to what kind of soap he used and exactly how hot the water was in the shower. Or a half a page about his workout routine. I appreciate detail and world building but some times less is more.
Maker is always right and that degraded this story for me. In a realistic sci first marine story it's about men and women fighting as marine units. It is not people who can't follow orders. On battlefields they are the first to die.
I truly tried to like this book. But it started out implausible and got worse and I just have trouble with books like that. The author has a responsibility to create a universe where the things that go on can actually happen and he just didn't do that.
I managed to read the whole thing but it just was not very good as far as I am concerned. I got it as a free download so I am only out the time spent reading it.
Way too many secret weapons just show up as needed to save the day.
Very pedestrian for a space opera. Kind of a paint by the numbers exercise in science fiction. Was going to say little character development, however, there was some, probably a page worth in the beginning but that was pretty much it. The only interesting character was the alien, Erlen, and he really didn't have a speaking part. So, a couple of stars for being entertaining and a star for making the effort to ensure it was proof read, but really can't recommend the book with the possible exception of it being suitable for young teens.
The initial premise was acceptable; however, the author got lost in space somewhere and quickly lost my interest. The lead character is a former Marine senior NCO who was apparently a super Seal-type warrior before being dismissed. Of course, events lead to the human race needing him to come to the rescue and he is recalled to active duty as a 2LT [should have made him a SGTMAJ]! From there, the story gets really unenjoyable because this super trooper cannot seem to remember the basics of close combat and presence of situation -- he always seems to get blind-sided without any warning. Not worth the paper it was not written on.
Great plot, great characters, great universe. Two problems though.
1. To short.
2. Protaganist is an idiot and doesn't match his reputation. He frequently gets distracted and daydreams in conversations. This supposedly decorated and veteran marine gets distracted in the middle of fights and needs to be snapped back to reality by others. This supposedly decorated and veteran marine gets tricked by a simple and common two pronged attack. This supposedly decorated and veteran marine needs a brand new marine on his first assignment to see through a disguise. He is supposed to be their leader but he has no command presence or confidence. He constantly demonstrates to his soldiers how not in control he is. He completely confides all his secrets in two civilians he barely knows, and when they show themselves to have no honor and be complete fools he does nothing, not even yell at them. They use the excuse of following orders to excuse not using their brains.
